Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS Visa) Subclass 482

In our current era of globalisation, there are instances when the skilled labor’s need surpasses the available workforce within one nation’s border. Australia and many other countries have devised diverse visa programs that lure talents from other nations via different procedures. One such program that falls under this category is ‘Temporary Skill Shortage Visa or 482 visa’. Australian employers are allowed to sponsor foreigners with necessary expertise that is not available in the local candidates. This was after 457 visa was replaced by the 482 visa in March,2018 and it consists of three-tiered streams. These include Specialist skills, Core skills and Essential skills pathway.


 

The Three-Tiered System

Tier 1 – Specialist Skills Pathway

  • No occupation list, but excludes trades, machine operators, drivers, and labourers.
  • Minimum guaranteed earnings: $141,210 (for 2025–2026), indexed annually.
  • Priority processing with a 7-day median timeframe.

Tier 2 – Core Skills Pathway

  • Based on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), updated regularly by Jobs and Skills Australia.
  • Minimum guaranteed earnings: $76,515 (for 2025–2026), indexed annually.

Tier 3 – Essential Skills Pathway

  • For roles earning below $76,515 in essential sectors.

 

Key Eligibility Requirements

The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa lets you live and work in Australia for up to 4 years and also provides a pathway to permanent residency.

Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) Updates
  • Over 70 new jobs were added, including Data Analyst, Supply Chain Analyst, Tour Guide, and Child Care Worker.
  • Some roles were removed, such as Café and Restaurant Manager, ICT Support Engineer, and Graphic Designer.
Labour Market Testing (LMT)
  • Employers must show they have tried to hire Australian workers first before bringing in overseas workers.
  • The current LMT period is 4 months, but may be extended to 6 months soon.
Australian Market Salary Rate (AMSR)

Employers must pay at least the minimum salary for each visa stream:

  • Specialist Skills Stream: $141,210
  • Core Skills Stream: $76,515 (reviewed each year)
Employer Obligations

Employers need to prove they are financially stable and able to pay the required salary throughout the worker’s visa period.


 

Conditions

  • Visa holders under the 482 program are allowed to work and live in Australia temporarily.

  • They must have to follow the job restriction and visa duration restriction strictly.

  • Depending upon the occupation and the type of visa, extensions might be permitted.

  • Visa holders under the 482 program are permitted to work and live in Australia temporarily. They do have to follow job restrictions and visa duration restrictions.

  • Depending upon the occupation and visa stream, extensions might be allowed, with potential roadmap to permanent residency in actual scenario.
